Frequently asked questions
What is Briteway and how does it work?
Briteway is an innovative travel app designed to assist train travellers, currently in Wales and soon around the rest of the UK. It works by using Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) to show you inside train stations in real time and help you navigate them. The app helps you in two ways. The first is planning your rail journeys, so that you can view in advance the layout, access and amenities in stations, see how you can navigate them or swap to a more accessible route. The other is real-time navigation and information during your journey. This includes a live chat function to speak to station staff.
How do I get started and set up my account?
First, download the app to your phone using the Download button on the top right of any page of this website. Then follow the on screen options to create your account using your name and email account. You can also enter a phone number for an Emergency Contact (any friend or helper who you want to help you in an emergency). Once you complete the registration, you will be ready to start using the app.
Where are the instructions on how to use the app?
There is a user guide in the app. You will see it after you have registered or you can select it from the Menu. Download a pdf of the user guide here: Download user guide

Yes. You can use Briteway on your phone, tablet, laptop or computer. However, to use Briteway during travel, it is designed to work best on a mobile device (phone or tablet) so that you can hold it in your hand as you walk around train stations following the directions.
Is Briteway available for everyone?
Yes. Briteway is available and useful for everyone, including people with specific needs at train stations.
How do I access the chat function when I need support from a person?
You can access the chat function within the Briteway app by clicking the GET HELP button or from the App Menu. If you need immediate assistance during your journey, simply tap Get Help to open the chat and start a conversation with the chatbot or connect with your Emergency Contact.
What do you mean by “Empowering you to travel’?
Travelling by train can be challenging for some people, e.g. reduced mobility, require a ramp or lift, can’t use stairs, have difficulty navigating, or find travel stressful, especially travel to new, unfamiliar places. Briteway uses Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) to help you see in advance where you’re going, taking away the worry of what you’ll find when you get there. With station navigation, real-time visual aids and valuable station information, it’s like having a trusted travel companion by your side. It can help you travel more than you otherwise would, including to places you weren’t sure you could go. This is what we mean when we say it empowers you.
Who is behind Briteway and its development?
Briteway was created by Briteyellow in partnership with Transport for Wales. It is funded by The Design Age Institute, the UK’s national strategic unit for design and the healthy ageing economy, the Department for Transport, and Innovate UK. Through the transformative power of design, Design Age Institute aims to help everyone age happier and healthier. Briteway is part of its Transport & Mobility Pathfinder Innovation Programme. It has been designed by Studiomade, a creative agency specialising in digital products for the healthcare sector.
